Crash test assesses plane emergency locator transmitters

A Cessna 172 dropped to the concrete from 82 feet (25 meters) at the Landing and Impact Research Facility at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, to test the performance of four emergency locator transmitters (ELTs) installed on board.

Researchers are working to improve ELT aircraft installations since studies show they don’t always work correctly.
